What it is
The gain or loss locked in when coins move, added up per day.
Every coin that moves has gained or lost value since it last moved. If the close on the day it moves is above the close on the day it last moved, the difference times the amount is realized profit; if below, realized loss. The chart adds these up per day: profit above zero in green, loss below zero in red. Not every move is a sale: coins shuffled between a holder's own wallets count too.
How to read it
Tall green bars are coins changing hands at a gain, tall red bars at a loss.
The largest profit day in our data is $10.7B on Nov 21, 2024, with bitcoin closing at $98,451. The largest loss day is $7.15B on Feb 5, 2026, at a close of $62,795. In the 30 days before every cycle top in our data profit outweighed loss, and before every cycle low loss outweighed profit.
How it’s computed
Per coin moved: amount × (close on the day it moves − close on the day it last moved).
We replay every block on our Bitcoin Core node. Each spent coin arrives with the block it was created in, which gives the day it last moved and so its cost basis. Gains add to realized profit and losses to realized loss, both at daily closes. Coins created before Aug 18, 2011, when our price history starts, are left out when they move, because the price they last moved at is unknown. The chart starts on that day.
Net realized profit into past cycle tops and lows
Each row is a day picked by our own price data: the highest daily close of each bull market, and the lowest close between two tops. The last column is realized profit minus realized loss over the 30 days that ended on that day.

Dates are UTC daily closes. The latest low is provisional until a new cycle top confirms it. Moves of coins created before our price history begins are not counted, which weighs most on the early rows.
