What it is
Bitcoin's supply split by how long each coin has sat without moving.
Every unspent output has an age: the time since its coins last moved on-chain. Each day we sort all supply into 12 age bands, from under a day to over ten years, and plot each band's share. We compute it ourselves by replaying every block on our own Bitcoin Core node, from the genesis block in January 2009 to today.
How to read it
Youngest coins at the bottom, oldest at the top. A band’s thickness is its share of supply that day.
Blue at the bottom is coins that moved in the last day. The bands under a year old are greens and blues; from one year up they turn purple, pink, orange and yellow, with red at the top for coins untouched for over ten years. When the young bands at the bottom swell, old coins are moving again. Hover over any day to read each band's share.
What past cycles show
The share older than a year has been higher at every cycle low than at the top before it.
At the December 2013 top 39.0% of supply was over a year old; by the January 2015 low it was 53.5%. The later cycles went from 43.6% at the 2017 top to 50.5% at the 2018 low and from 54.3% at the 2021 top to 66.5% at the 2022 low. Rallies bring old coins back into circulation as holders sell into higher prices. In bear markets fewer coins change hands, so more of them age past a year.
Supply older than 1 year at past cycle tops and lows
Each row is a day picked by our own price data: the highest daily close of each bull market, and the lowest close between two tops. The last column is the share of all bitcoin that had not moved for a year or more on that day.
