What it is
The average price at which every bitcoin in circulation last moved on-chain.
Every unspent coin is valued at the daily close of the day it last moved. Add those values up and you get realized cap; divide by the number of coins and you get realized price, the network's average cost basis. It changes only when coins move or new ones are mined, so it drifts slowly while the market price swings. The STH line is the same average over coins that last moved less than 155 days ago: roughly what recent buyers paid.
How to read it
Above the line the average coin is in profit, below it at a loss.
Bitcoin has closed below its realized price on 11% of days since 2011. The STH line moves faster, because young coins carry recent prices. When the close drops under it, the average coin that moved in the last 155 days is at a loss. On Oct 14, 2026 the close was 10% above it.
How it’s computed
Realized cap ÷ total supply: each coin valued at the close of the day it last moved.
We replay every block on our Bitcoin Core node and keep, for every day, how many of the coins created that day are still unspent and what they cost at that day's close. Coins that have not moved since before Aug 18, 2011, when our price history starts, count toward supply at a cost basis of zero, the same convention Coin Metrics and Glassnode use. That is why the line starts near zero in 2011 and climbs quickly as old coins move. The STH line counts only coins younger than 155 days.
Realized price at past cycle tops and lows
Each row is a day picked by our own price data: the highest daily close of each bull market, and the lowest close between two tops. Every confirmed cycle low closed below the realized price: by 45% in 2015, 31% in 2018 and 22% in 2022. The lowest close since the 2025 top, $58,526 on Jun 30, 2026, stayed 10% above it.
