What it is

How many hashes per second the whole network is computing to find blocks.

Hash rate is the raw work rate securing Bitcoin. It is measured in hashes per second, today in the range of hundreds of exahashes (1018), climbing into zettahashes (1021). More hash rate means a more expensive chain to attack.

How it's estimated

From the blocks actually found each day, against that day’s difficulty, not the 10-minute target.

The network never reports its hash rate directly. We estimate it: if n blocks were found in a day at difficulty D, the network was doing about n × D × 232 ÷ 86,400 hashes per second. Because it reads real block times, the line moves between difficulty adjustments, which is how a miner shutdown shows up before the next retarget. The daily figure is noisy, so this chart plots a 7-day average.

Hash rate vs difficulty

Difficulty is the target the network sets; hash rate is the work it actually brings.

Difficulty only re-tunes every 2,016 blocks and is exact; hash rate is an estimate that varies day to day. When hash rate runs above difficulty, the next retarget adjusts up, and vice versa. The two track each other over the long run; see the mining difficulty chart for the stepped view.
